I really like this post. I totally agree that there is a large disconnect and it is doing a disservice to students. Instead of resisting and ignoring Wikipedia it would serve students better to TEACH them how to effectively use it as a tool to discover information and let it be a launching point. The points that you made, and so many more, really highlight how difficult it is to be a teacher in the 21st century. Information and technology are changing so rapidly I can only imagine how difficult it must be to teach right now, and really feel like you have prepared your students for college (and life for that matter.) ::applause::

Great point, Steffi. While Wikipedia might not be a source that teachers/professors want to see cited in a research paper, it should still be recognized as a great place to start the research process. I think the days of considering a source legit only if it exists in hard copy are soon to be gone.

True, schools need to realize the impact of sites like Wikipedia, but they must continue to question and request RELIABLE sources, which unfortunately, Wikipedia is not. Finding that reliable information is all a part of the learning process, something which every student needs to take into the real world. Good post!

I think you're absolutely right. Augmented reality would be a great addition into today's classrooms. Being able to change lesson plans on the spot and providing compelling ways for kids to learn will only help them gain more knowledge. Good job!

Agreed - online advertising seems like a great form of subsidiary (not primary) income since word-of-mouth and viral campaigns can be more effective. I don't think companies should discount AdWords or Facebook ads, but they such traditional approaches won't garner the same qualitative results as other widespread forms of outreach.

Very true...if we stay in our comfort zones, how can we truly experience what life has to offer? Some of the best inventions were created by mistake (ie, penicillin). As a tutor, I encourage my students to think outside the box and stand behind their ideas, even if those ideas may not align exactly with what their teacher is looking for. It's great that you take the same approach with your teaching philosophy, because it reaches so many other aspects of life...we need more teachers like you!

Very true. It's complicated too -- I've seen firsthand that the need for different strategies for different types of "crises." Like I'd react differently to a mean news story than I would to a product defect.

Sometimes I think the problem is that companies DO have a crisis management plan but that it is too one-size-fits-all and not modified to fit the unique circumstances of each situation.

Several reports measuring the effectiveness of the integration of social media ads and traditional media Super Bowl ads came out today, but there were few reports that gauged them separately.

I guess that might be because it is too hard to capture the traditional media marketing effects like how many people are talking about the brand offline, and the purchasing effect that might be generated by TV ads is hard to measure in the short term too. But it is relatively easy to measure how many people are talking about something online, especially in social media platforms.

Interesting. I never thought about how much media our students are looking at. Well I have, but I haven't really applied any teaching lessons to them. Hmmmm...Makes you wonder if home schooling as an option for low SES kids with an internet connection might be the way to go?
